Right now, members of Congress are pushing 13 bills that would strip away the District’s right to self-governance. These bills would let politicians from outside DC decide how we run our schools, courts, policing, housing, and even who represents us in government.
As you know from news reports, District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit the morning of Friday, August 15, to stop the federal government takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department. Lawyers for the District of Columbia and the federal government went before a federal judge later that afternoon. As a result of the District's efforts, command and control of the Metropolitan Police Department remains with Chief Pamela Smith (click to watch NBC Washington's overview).
The Ward 2 Democrats reject President Donald Trump’s unprecedented attempt to seize control of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and deploy the National Guard in the District of Columbia. This federal takeover is a dangerous overreach that strikes at the heart of the District’s already limited home rule.
